Respite Care  - November 2010
       klang hospice January 2009 m.yoong

Love and care are words which we take for granted, always expecting but never giving enough back in return. Some people are blessed by love and are able to give love. With all the sufferings in the world, there should be a balance where the helpless are helped by those who carry beacons of light to light up their path.
Make some time and ask yourself, "Do I sincerely have it in my heart to sit in silence, listen with patience and open my heart to those who need me?"
A promise has been made by those who said yes to the above. Those blessed few souls who are determined to want to make a change for the sick and less fortunate. An idea was formulated, a plan set to motion and that is how Respite Care at Hospice Klang was formed.

Stories

A lady in her mid sixties was diagnosed with cancer not too long ago. She passed her days with nothing much but dread for her next treatment date. All alone, without close friends or family to love or care about, she asks everyday for nothing but compassion and love. In another house, the other side of town, a single mother of three is bedridden with stage four cancer. Her youngest barely eight and her oldest barely sixteen, she sleeps every night in worry, praying for a better life for her children.
There is no denying that a mother's love is ever so strong, full of courage even in times of extremity. She puts on a brave face, smiles tenderly and promises her little five year old daughter that the pain will be gone tomorrow despite knowing deep down that it is a promise she will break over and over again. She does her best to give her hope and something to look forward to, even if all she can do is make her young comfortable by playing tunes on the piano every day.
All these strangers who may seem foreign to each other, but together they can fight to make everyday a better one for each other. Respite care gives them a purpose, a hobby and most importantly, something to look forward to every week. Not all the sick in this world are blessed to have an ever growing abundance of love and care surrounding them. Thus, the people of the respite care project and volunteers full of compassion can sure help fill up their void.
Respite care at Hospice Klang offers a variety of activities for patients every Saturday. Activities from art and craft to long lost childhood games, Reiki massages (helps in pain relief), counseling, breathing exercises and body massage therapy. The  project started about a month ago aims to bring patients closer to help them in their healing process. They get to exchange problems and have social activities which keep them busy. However, due to the limited space and time every Saturday, there aren't much activities that can be done yet, like cooking or knitting. Even so, more and more activities based on patients' preferences will be added on as time progresses.

I just found out that I might have cancer. My children are not living with me anymore and there is no one else to help me so I was told to come here. I love it here. Friendly and helpful people and I get to past time too.

I’m a grandfather who has cancer and been coming here for two years. In the past I’m just here to see doctors for checkups but now I even get to play games and do activities. I love coming here. Helps me past time. Helps that people are friendly too.
I love it here because I get to spend time with my friends and do activities too. Like I wouldn’t have had a chance to make cards or do art and craft at home alone but here with friends I am able to do it. Doctors are kind. Volunteers are friendly too.
I cannot begin to express how much all of them here mean to me. I’ve been here for four years and I’ve never been in such good care. I have no means of transport but this doesn’t stop me from coming. Agnes picks me up every week. During the weekdays, a nurse even comes to visit me. I love the new activities here.
The thing I love most here is the Reiki Massage. It helps with pain relief. I’m currently in remission and it feels nice to be able to give others some hope. Being here is the hihlight of my week. I get to do things with my friends and it helps that everyone here is friendly and helpful.
